Student life: Edge Hill web design student flies to new job at British Aerospace

Wade Phillips from Cornwall graduated from BSC (HONS) Web Design & Development

Mature student graduates with a First Class Honors degree from Edge Hill University and has a dream job with British Aerospace, working with clients to design and improve the user experience of their online systems.

Wade Phillips, of Cornwall, first chose his BSC (HONS) degree in Web Design and Development after identifying a career in web design as flexible work with many opportunities.

Wade said, “I used to work as a paramedic but always loved to travel, often used all of my annual leave at once and took two or three months to see the world. What I really wanted was a job that would allow me to work while I was traveling. Website design jumped out at me as a job I could do anywhere and for any number of businesses or organizations.

Wade chose Edge Hill for its specific degree in web design and because of the university’s high employment rate within the profession. He had never studied coding before, but with the support of his teachers, he quickly learned it.

“Coding was tough at first, but I managed to get it back and now I’m graduating with a first and all the tools needed to be successful in the web design industry.” Wade added. “I was amazed by getting the best mark on the course two years in a row.

“As a mature student, I definitely enjoyed college more a second time. I feel like I learned and took away so much from the course. I would say the top three skills I gained through the degree would be problem solving, teamwork, and communication skills, but more so in a technological setting, using a range of tools with which I would not have gained experience otherwise.

“I cannot thank my speakers enough for all the support and encouragement I have received over the past three years, especially during the pandemic where they made home learning really easy. I also got three scholarships to support me along my journey which made my life a little easier and allowed me to focus on my studies.

Wade will soon begin his work as a user experience consultant for BAE Systems Applied Intelligence, working with customers to provide the best possible user experience for their digital solutions.

“My plans for the future are to continue to bridge the gap between users and digital products and services. Ultimately, I want to make a difference in people’s lives by using the latest research to improve the technologies they use. Ultimately, I would like to start my own consulting firm and share my passion for user experience with a wider range of clients around the world.
